I hadn't known him long,
And yet I knew him well.
So many things to say,
So much I couldn't tell.
Then one day I met her
And it was plain to me:
They love each other,
And so a friend I'll be.

And people move apart.
He left to go to school,
I drew her to my heart.
Then one day I found her
Quiet, subdued, and lonely.
But she said, "Don't blame him,"
So a friend to both I'll be.
Then he came home
And sud'nly I could see
What I thought he did to her,
She had done to he.
To the weakness he let me see
When he was down and low
I owed greater loyalty,
